GBCC has begun its institutional reaccreditation journey that affirms GBCC’s commitment to continuous improvement in our learning community. Here are some points that explain what this process is and what it involves.
What is Accreditation?
The voluntary system of peer review of a college against best practice standards.
What is GBCC’s Accrediting Agency?
The New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), one of six geographically based non-governmental, non-profit organizations recognized by the US Department of Education as a reliable authority on the quality of educational institutions and programs.
Why is Accreditation Important?
- Says our institution deserves the public trust.
- Recognizes the quality and integrity of our programs and services for transfer and in business and industry.
- Establishes our ability to award financial aid.
- The reaccreditation process itself supports organizational growth and enhancement.
What is GBCC’s history and current status in NEASC?
- Prior to 2002: Accreditation in NEASC’s Commission on Career and Technical Institutions.
- 2002: Accreditation in NEASC’s Commission on Institutions of Higher Education for 5 years.
- 2007: Re-accreditation in NEASC’s Commission on Institutions of Higher Education for 10 Years.
- 2016: Beginning the process to reaccreditation in 2017.
When is the Peer Review Team Visit scheduled?
October 29 -November 1, 2017
What does the reaccreditation process include?
- Preparation of an extensive self-assessment (called a Self-Study) and numerous data forms
- Peer College Review Team Visit
- Peer Team Report to NEASC
- NEASC Commission Follow up
How long does it take?
Approximately 2 years from the Self- Study preparation to reaccreditation.
How will GBCC be evaluated?
According to a Set of Standards established by the coalition of colleges and universities within NEASC Commission.
What is the Self- Study?
The self-study narrative responds to a set of criteria or “Standards” that allow colleges to demonstrate institutional quality. It is organized into a 3 pronged framework:
- Description (What does the institution do to meet the standard?)
- Appraisal (How well does it meet the standard?)
- Projection (What commitments does it make to improve?)
This process engages the entire educational community in structured analysis, self-reflection, and planning.
How can you help?
A successful self-study will rely on the entire community’s input and feedback, which will be sought through surveys, interviews and All-college and focus group style meetings.
Once we have completed the whole process, it is a new beginning of fulfilling the commitments GBCC has made in its Self-Study Projections and any recommendation made by the NEASC Commission.
