PORTSMOUTH – Great Bay Community College has completed its basketball head coaching staff for the 2016-17 season, hiring Portsmouth native Jeff Gray as its women’s basketball coach.

Athletic director Allyson Britton, who coached the team during its inaugural season, said Friday that Gray was offered the stipend position, accepted it and has started in his job. A knowledge of the local basketball landscape for recruiting was a requirement.

“Being born and raised here, he’s got the connection we were looking for,” she said.

Last week, the Herons named former Epping High School coach Sean Young as coach of its men’s team.

Britton guided the Great Bay women to a 7-13 record this past winter, a season that was hampered by an injury to standout point guard Markey Flewelling on Dec. 5. At the time, the Herons were 6-2; they went 1-11 the rest of the way, losing in the quarterfinals of the Yankee Small College Conference tournament.

Gray, a 1991 graduate of Portsmouth High School who lives in Somersworth, has coached with the New England Rebels AAU program.

Three players are slated to return next season as sophomores: guard Nichole Marrero of Dover, and forwards Ashley Lambert of Farmington and Annessa Cummer of Milton.
