A survey of African American literature and culture in which students encounter a variety of texts and performances ranging from traditional types of literature including fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry, to standup comedy, film, music, and dance. The goal is to gain a broader understanding of the profound impact African Americans and their cultural/artistic contributions have had on American society, politics, culture, and the American soul. Prerequisites or co- requisite: ENGL110G or ENGL111G or equivalent. (Fulfills English or Humanities requirement.) Fall semester
