For Students

The University of New Hampshire Connection program (UNH Connection Program) is a planned program to prepare students for a successful transfer to the University of New Hampshire. The goal of the program is to encourage and insure access to the exceptional academic opportunities available to students at Great Bay Community College and at the University of New Hampshire (UNH).

Participating in the UNH Connection Program

Most students enter the program in one of two ways:
1. Students who applied but were not eligible for admission to UNH and for whom there is no connection to the University's Thompson School of Applied Science are invited to join the program. Interested students complete a release form allowing the UNH Office of Admissions to share their admissions to share their admissions materials with the Community College at Stratham/Portsmouth.

2. The Program is also available to students who never applied to UNH but wish to begin their academic careers at the Community College. Students indicate their interest in the UNH Connection Program by completing a records release form.

Transferring Credits to UNH

Close collaboration between the student and the Community College advisor is essential to ensure a positive and productive experience. While at the Community College, students enroll in appropriate course work to prepare them for transition to UNH. Students will have the opportunity to develop academic maturity while fulfilling many general education requirements and prerequisites for their desired major at UNH. Students may seek to transfer to UNH after they complete the minimum 24 college level credits or they may choose to remain at the Community College until they complete the associate degree. Advisors will assist each student in developing an appropriate time frame for transfer to UNH. In general, minimum admission requirements for transfer to unrestricted programs at UNH are:

  • Students must earn a minimum of 24 college level credits with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.8 and no grade below C.
  • Students must complete the following coursework as part of the required 24 college level credits:
First year English Composition
A course in laboratory science
Mathematics courses through at least algebra II, statistics, or finite math

Available Programs of Study

The admission criteria outlined in this brochure are appropriate for general admission to unrestricted programs at UNH. Some UNH academic programs are highly competitive and have specific course requirements or space limitations. Discussion with transfer advisors at the Community College and UNH about admission criteria to specific academic programs is an important responsibility of the student.

UNH Housing

Limited housing opportunities are available at UNH for UNH Connection students. However, students who complete their associate degree from GBCC before they transfer are guaranteed University housing. Students interested in on-campus UNH housing should contact the UNH Housing Office at (603) 862-2120.
